How to Know You're Going to Heaven

The atmosphere above planet Earth.

First, you must accept that you are a sinner.

"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God."
Romans 3:23

"As it is written, there is none righteous, no, not one."
Romans 3:10

"The thought of foolishness is sin..."
Proverbs 24:9

"Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin."
James 4:17

No one is perfect. No one has lived up to God's perfect standard.

Second, you must accept that as a sinner you owe a penalty.

"For the wages of sin is death..." - Romans 6:23

"...the soul that sinneth, it shall die." - Ezekial 18:4

This death isn't just the death of your body. Death is described in the Bible as the second death, the lake of fire.

"And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death."
Revelation 20:14

"But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."
Revelation 21:8

Third, you must accept that Jesus Christ has already paid your sin debt.

"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
Romans 5:6

"For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures;"
1 Corinthians 15:3-4

Jesus Christ, the Son of God and God in the flesh, was not a sinner. The Bible teaches that God took all of our sin and placed it on Christ. While Christ was bearing all of our sins in His own body on the cross, God sacrificed Him in our place to pay the debt we owe. This is not something God has promised He will do. It is something God has already done.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
John 3:16

"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."
2 Corinthians 5:21

Fourth, you must accept by faith what Jesus Christ did for you.

"He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him."
John 3:36

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life."
John 6:47

God divides the world into two groups: those who believe on Jesus Christ and those who do not. Those who believe have everlasting life that cannot be lost, and those that do not believe shall not see life.

The word believe means "to trust, to depend on, to rely on". To believe on the Lord Jesus Christ means that you accept the facts that you are a sinner, that as a sinner you owe the sin penalty, and that Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose from the grave to pay the debt you owe.

But it also means going one step further. It means that you will completely trust Jesus Christ to get you to Heaven -- that you will put the matter of your salvation into His hands and depend on Him for everlasting life.

Now the moment you do this, God promises that you are not condemned but that you have everlasting life and you shall not perish.

"Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:"
John 11:25

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."
Ephesians 2:8-9

You believe, now what?

If you have believed on Christ, trusting Him alone for your eternal salvation, then God has given you eternal life and has sealed you with His indwelling Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). You now have peace with God (Romans 5:1) because you are a born-again child of God (John 1:12). Here is a helpful list of things to do now that you are saved:

  • Say a prayer thanking Jesus Christ for what he did on your behalf. (Psalms 107:1)
  • Pray often and about everything. (Philippians 4:6)
  • Tell friends, family, and others about Jesus and His promise of eternal life to the believer. (Mark 16:15)
  • Get a Bible if you don't already have one. If you can't get access to a physical Bible then read one online. Read it as often as you can. (Matthew 4:4)
  • Find a church of believers to grow with. (Hebrews 10:25)
